Organizations like Simpson – and the communities they operate in — unequivocally rely on regular volunteers like Julie. That was true before the pandemic, but the critical need of volunteers (and the value of those volunteer hours) has only increased as it’s gotten tougher to get together.

“I usually start painting and let each piece evolve,” artist Susan Davies says. “I listen to the work and interact with it until I feel like it’s done, and then, usually, I find out what it’s about.” Learn more about Susan’s work and her contributions to Art 4 Shelter here.

Simpson recently received a Minnesota Housing Finance Agency award of $11.1 million to rebuild our shelter and add 42 units of much-needed supportive housing! This puts us at 70 percent of our funding goal of $41 million.

St. Thomas and its community of volunteers regularly help Simpson in a variety of ways. Some folks like to serve meals at the shelter. Some sign up for tutoring and mentoring services. And every few months or so, they work with advocates like Jose to help transitioning families furnish their new homes. Read more here.

One of the most special, simple things StuartCo does for Simpson is the same thing it does for its properties: basic maintenance.

It’s a particularly huge relief for the emergency shelter, which served many years as a church before it ever became anyone’s home, and always needs a little love.

Memorial candles are never re-used. Carla Gainey, Simpson Executive Director from 1987-1997, was adamant that new candles be purchased every year. One for every life. To this day, we follow her example.  

The previous set of candleholders didn’t have enough room to fit a candle for everyone, but as luck would have it, Matthew — an Edina Scout — chose to do something for Simpson for his Eagle project.
