Simpson Leadership Transition Announcement
January 22, 2026
Dear Simpson Community:
It is with deep gratitude and a touch of bittersweet emotion that we share important news about the agency’s leadership. After 14 extraordinary years of service, Steve Horsfield has decided to step down as Executive Director, effective May 15, 2026.
Steve has been a visionary leader, guiding Simpson through a period of remarkable growth, resilience, and impact. Under his stewardship, Simpson has expanded extended-stay shelter and supportive housing programs, navigated unexpected challenges, and advanced our commitment to equity and anti-racism. Most recently, Steve helped lead the successful opening of Simpson Community Shelter & Apartments – a milestone that brings dignity, stability, and opportunity to people impacted by homelessness.
Throughout his tenure, Steve’s passion for Simpson’s mission, steady advocacy, and genuine care transformed challenges into opportunities. The legacy he leaves is one of profound benefit to Simpson Housing Services and the communities we support.
While we will miss Steve’s daily presence and wisdom, we are grateful he is departing at a moment when Simpson is strong and well-positioned for the future. We have a talented and committed staff, a sound financial position, innovative programs serving four counties with successful housing stability for individuals and families, a new building providing dignity to people in shelter, and a clear vision for even greater impact ahead. This transition reflects a thoughtful personal decision by Steve to focus on his family and well-being after years of devoted service and positions Simpson for the next chapter.
Steve will remain fully engaged during the transition period, working closely with Board leadership to ensure a seamless handover of knowledge and responsibilities. The leadership transition will be overseen by Board President Stephanie Abel, with the search committee chaired by past Board Presidents Steve Proeschel and Patricia Harmon. To support this process, the Board has engaged Ballinger | Leafblad, a Minnesota-based executive search firm with deep experience partnering with nonprofit and civic organizations, to guide a thoughtful and inclusive search.
“Steve’s leadership has been transformational for Simpson, and we are profoundly grateful for his service and the strong organization he leaves behind. His integrity, deep care for people, and unwavering commitment to Simpson’s mission have left a lasting impact on our staff, participants, supporters, partners, and the community we serve.” – Stephanie Abel, Simpson Board President
We invite you to join us to celebrate Steve Horsfield’s remarkable contributions to Simpson Housing Services at our annual fundraiser Art 4 Shelter on Friday, May 1 at Quincy Hall. His leadership has touched so many lives, including yours—and the work we do together will continue to honor that legacy.
Thank you for your ongoing support, belief in our mission, and partnership. Together, we will carry forward the momentum Steve Horsfield helped build and achieve even more for the communities we support.
— On behalf of Simpson Housing Services’ Board of Directors
P.S. Stay tuned for updates on the transition and ways to get involved. We value your partnership and enthusiasm as we move forward!
