Artist Feature: Florence Hill

Artwork by Florence Hill

Throughout her life, Florence’s artistic talents have been inspired by nature as it appears in the moment. “As a child growing up where art education was not offered in school, I made “art” outdoors where I watched nature—who seemed to be my teacher. It was an urge to create with my hands that has never left, and now many years later, I still enjoy leaving my studio to paint en plein air,” she says.

Florence’s artwork also reflects the intricate relationships that are created by and through nature. “My art might be best categorized as both contemporary and representational. My images talk about light and observing nature as She makes art. I try to describe those dramas of the moment that are never repeated, exactly the same, at another time,” she adds.
Florence has been a practicing artist for over 55 years and her work has been shown locally, nationally, and in Europe. She has received many awards for painting, drawing, watercolor and sculpture. Outside of some smaller local venues she now prefers exhibiting her images in her studio.

Florence appreciates all types of art —and music—and enjoys working in and with the robust Twin Cities’ art community. Her studio has hosted a figure drawing group that has met every Sunday for more than 42 years. Florence is also active in guiding art projects and events that involve children and their families in her neighborhood. During the last 26 years, many of these community activities have taken place in the Artstop Garden, her city lot of flowers and sculpture, which serves as a community meeting place.

Some years ago, Florence first heard of Art 4 Shelter from an artist who comes to her drawing group. Moved by the impact of the event, she supported Art 4 Shelter as a participating artist. “Art is a powerful tool that reaches out to heal body, spirit and community. Art 4 Shelter is that kind of tool which can nourish, comfort, and heal those who are in need. We who have a guaranteed bed and refrigerator filled must do what we can to help to improve the world around us,” says Florence.  As a contributing artist for many years, Florence believes that Art 4 Shelter is an unique way for artists to help the community while doing what they love.

Florence was born on a Minnesota farm near the North Dakota and Canadian borders. She is a long-time resident of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood in Minneapolis.
