Simpson’s Community Response

Friday, January 30, 2026

Dear Simpson Community,

We want to provide you with an update on Simpson Housing Services’ programs during this unimaginable and deeply painful moment in the Whittier neighborhood and the broader Minneapolis community.

The tragedy involving Alex Jeffrey Pretti, who was killed at the hands of ICE agents on Nicollet Avenue, occurred just blocks from several homes to families supported by Simpson and Simpson Community Shelter & Apartments, which began operations only two weeks ago.

Within minutes of Saturday’s horrific incident, Simpson staff began communicating to assess safety and coordinate support for shelter guests and participants in the neighborhood. Staff contacted families to check in, ensure they were safe, and provide additional support as needed, including assisting a young family member in getting home safely after basketball practice.

At Simpson Community Shelter & Apartments, meal group volunteers were offered the option to cancel due to safety concerns and extreme cold, but they insisted on showing up, parking several blocks away and walking in below-zero temperatures to prepare and serve meals and offer comfort to shelter guests and staff.

This response reflects the deep commitment of staff and volunteers to care for our community, no matter the circumstances. In the midst of sorrow and uncertainty, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of showing up for one another.

Looking for a meaningful way to support the community?

We invite you to consider volunteering with us through Simpson’s new volunteer program at Simpson Community Shelter & Apartments — Cook & Connect.
Cook & Connect is an easy and fun, hands-on experience where volunteers join Simpson’s professional chef in our state-of-the-art kitchen to help prepare and serve nutritious meals to people impacted by homelessness.
There are more than 30 lunch and dinner shifts available in February and March.
Gather your group (two to six people) for a meaningful volunteer experience that truly brings people together to serve lunch or dinner at Simpson’s shelter.
Every meal is more than food — it is connection, dignity, and community in action.

In solidarity and with deep gratitude,
–  The Simpson Housing Services Staff
