Featured Artist: Shona Dockter

Shona Dockter has been involved with Art 4 Shelter since 2019, when she heard about the fundraiser from a friend. She works as a decorative finish artist for interiors and furniture. She’s been making art her entire life but recently found a renewed passion for creating when she became an empty nester.

Shona enjoys working in a variety of media, fusing vintage elements with modern simplicity. She explores motifs of place, childhood, and feminism through pieces that seem to thrum with vibrant light and color.

She says, “I am wildly excited about acrylics, gold leaf, mixed media, book arts, and feminist art. Themes of small-town prairie life are rooted in my childhood spent on the plains of North Dakota. Capturing the memories I hold dear drives my desire to bring others along on the journey to sacred spaces.”

Connecting with others is at the heart of Shona’s creative pursuits. She has a close-knit community of artist friends. “We continually encourage, inspire, and are present for each other in many ways. My art is a celebration of the many communities to which I belong.”

She continues, “Art 4 Shelter is an inroad to tangibly recognizing and contributing to community on a broader level; it’s a continuing engagement benefitting both the artist and those on the margins. Art 4 Shelter is a way to recognize the humanity in all populations.”

Shona appreciates that Art 4 Shelter gives her a unique way to connect with marginalized people and to contribute to Simpson Housing Services’ mission.

“Affordable housing, and housing in general, is one of the biggest crises our nation faces. It can often feel overwhelming to figure out how to tackle a problem that seems insurmountable. The great thing about Art 4 Shelter is it gives us all a way to start thinking about and actively working to solve this crisis.”
