If you find yourself drawn to a beautiful watercolor painting that pulls you in with gorgeous hues, wonderful light, and naturalistic scenery, you might have discovered some of Pat Swanson’s work.
A member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society, Pat has taught beginning watercolor classes and won Best of Show in the 2022 MNWS fall exhibit.
Pat loves focusing on detail and working on photorealistic watercolor pieces. She’s also ventured out into abstract art recently and enjoys playing with gold foil, acrylic paint, and collage.
Pat is a longtime contributor to Art 4 Shelter and resonates with Simpson Housing Services’ mission. She’s seen firsthand how housing instability affects adults and children. During almost four decades as a teacher in downtown St. Paul, she worked with a number of families who were experiencing homelessness.
“Their plight broke my heart,” Pat says. “I also have a family member who served in Vietnam and became homeless while dealing with his service-related PTSD.”
Pat has another family connection to Art 4 Shelter. Her sister, Featured Artist Sandy Tuzinski, is a professional artist who has been donating to Art 4 Shelter for many years.
“She encouraged me to donate my work too. We’re very happy to help support this worthwhile organization!”
Pat began painting in 2009 after she retired from teaching. By donating her art, she feels like she is part of Simpson’s work of providing housing and advocacy for people experiencing homelessness. She views Art 4 Shelter as a way to connect with people on the margins of society.
“Connecting to others can be difficult when we move in different circles, but art can be a common bond. It speaks to everyone in various ways and brings beauty to the world.”
