Corporate Spotlight: Two Harbors Investment Corp.

Two Harbors Investment Corp. (NYSE: TWO, “Two Harbors”) is a Twin Cities-based publicly-traded mortgage real estate investment trust. Two Harbors has a strong commitment to supporting its local communities through charities aligned within the housing sector. Simpson Housing Services is proud to partner with Two Harbors in providing housing solutions to the Twin Cities metro area.

The partnership between Two Harbors and Simpson began in 2014 with the Art 4 Shelter event, of which Two Harbors is now a premier sponsor. Since then, Two Harbors has supported a number of Simpson events such as serving meals at the shelter and organizing annual supply drives. A favorite project for the Two Harbors’ team is participating in Simpson’s annual back-to-school supply drive, Tools for School. In 2019, they collected 46 backpacks filled with supplies, preparing students in Simpson’s Family Housing Program for a successful school year. Two Harbors employees continue to increase their involvement with Simpson, with over 30% of its staff having participated in or donated to a service project supporting Simpson.

“Giving back to our community is one of our core beliefs as a company and our employees are continuously asking how they can do more to support Simpson and its mission,” says Alecia Hanson, Two Harbors’ Managing Director of Human Resources. “We’re focused on developing long-term relationships, and we look for where and how we can make the most impact. We’ve found that our relationship with Simpson is mutually beneficial to both our employees and the community we live in. We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with a wonderful organization that makes a substantial and positive impact in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.”

Two Harbors’ charitable relationship with Simpson is led by two individuals who are passionate about Simpson’s work, Dana Zuraff and Marlea Olson.

“Simpson events fill up fast at Two Harbors because we get to feel the direct impact of what we do — helping families with school supplies or going to serve a meal at the shelter. There is an emotional connection when you meet the people you are serving,” says Dana Zuraff. “It’s not just about the beds, it’s also having someone — staff and volunteers — to help them along the way. We get to know the guests. I love the updates when someone gets into housing.”

“What I appreciate about Simpson is their open-door policy,” continues Marlea Olson. “Everyone can come in no matter their situation — if they’re addicted or have a mental illness. There is no restriction. We may not see homelessness every day in our lives. It can be easy to overlook. To be able to act and interact builds awareness. Even if you impact one person or one family’s life, it matters.”

Simpson and Two Harbors have a valued partnership and Two Harbors encourages businesses and community members to join them and Simpson in providing housing solutions in the Twin Cities.
