Frequently Asked Questions: Volunteering with Simpson
What should we serve?
Each night, volunteer groups prepare hot meals for our shelter guests. The ideal meal is healthy, low in sodium and fat, and high in fresh fruits and vegetables. Click here to download menu ideas and recipes!
Please be aware that some of our shelter guests have dietary restrictions. You can always contact us if you have any questions about what to serve.
How many people do we cook for?
Each night, 44 men and 22 women stay at our shelter overnight. We also welcome former shelter guests to join us for evening meals. You should plan on having enough food to serve about 110 people.
Does volunteering really make a difference?
- Our volunteers are amazing! In 2010, volunteers contributed enough time to equal 14 full-time employees. They covered 92% of overnight shifts at the shelter, contributed 300 hours of tutoring for children in our Family Housing programs, and donated over 40,000 sanwiches for shelter guests to take with them during the day.
